SUMMARY:Viennale Erste Bank Film Award Screenings: Eve Heller
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 7:30pm at Anthology Film Archives for a 90-minute foray into some of Heller’s most exciting\, ethereal\, and thrilling works. This screening will include Heller’s latest short film\, Singing in Oblivion (2021)\, along with Creme 21 (2013)\, Self-Examination Remote Control (1981/2009)\, Ruby Skin (2005)\, Behind This Soft Eclipse (2004)\, Her Glacial Speed(2001)\, Astor Place (1997)\, and Last Lost (1996). \nEve Heller’s films have established her as one of the great contemporary practitioners of the found-footage genre. Her work exemplifies cinema’s capacity for recording traces of experience\, conveying fragments of history\, and conjuring the psychological\, visual\, and emotional textures of dreamlike states. Her moving image works—constructed from educational movies\, newsreels\, and her own cinematography—engage with personal and shared histories and exist at the crossroads of the intangible and the tactile. These films are suffused with the immediacy of lived experience—attentive to the physical reality of people\, animals\, and objects represented in the imagery—while equally sensitive to the materiality of the film medium itself\, channeling an elusive\, inscrutable domain of memories and emotional echoes. Heller fractures\, juxtaposes\, and distills her source materials such that new\, more evocative and resonant meanings and ideas emerge from the colliding fragments. \nHeller has demonstrated a continuing commitment to working with 16mm and 35mm film\, a choice that transcends a fetishistic or nostalgic attachment to the analog medium by emphasizing and making use of film’s unique ability to convey a palpable trace of the sensible world. Heller’s latest film\, Singing in Oblivion\, is emblematic of this commitment. It uses a variety of techniques—observational photography\, found imagery\, photograms\, and rich sound design—to conjure a meditation on death\, memory\, and transience. Centering on a Jewish Cemetery in the Vienna district of Währing\, which was partially destroyed by the Nazis and today exists in a state of decay\, Heller combines her own ghostly footage of the site with photograms of organic material\, as well as fragmentary imagery reprinted from glass negatives she discovered at a flea market in Vienna. Like so many of Heller’s works\, the film itself becomes a kind of photogram: a physical object on which now-vanished lives have left their imprint\, speaking equally to presence and absence. \n“The best of Heller’s films…are as mysterious and subtle as their titles\, weaving ghostly\, mainly black and white 16mm visions in which time seems suspended. At once ethereal and almost cloyingly vivid\, these oneiric works linger in the mind long after viewing.” –Maximilian Le Cain \nDate and Time: Monday\, October 16th\, 2023\, from 7:30 PM-9:30 PM \nTuesday\, October 17th\, 2023\, from 7:30 PM-9:30 PM \nLocation: Anthology Film Archives; 32 2nd Ave\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:What We Brought with Us - Panel Discussion & Exhibition on Academic Freedom and Objects of Memory
DESCRIPTION:University Alliance Ruhr and the Goethe-Institut are organizing an opening panel discussion and exhibition in New York City. “What We Brought with Us” is an exhibition developed by Academy in Exile at TU Dortmund University\, one of the three universities that comprise the University Alliance Ruhr. \nThe exhibition presents images of objects carried by some of Academy in Exile’s fellows when they fled from their countries of origin to Germany to where they were hosted by University of Duisburg-Essen\, Free University of Berlin\, Forum Transregionale Studien and Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) Essen. \nThe opening panel of the exhibition with Prof. Dr. Vanessa Agnew\, Prof. Kate A. Bonansinga\, Prof. Dr. Kader Konuk and Prof. Dr. Ulrich Baer serves as an engaging exploration of the significance and emotional resonance carried by the objects refugees bring with them when fleeing their homelands. “What We Brought with Us” invites us to question our relationship with possessions and each other. It prompts us to reflect on what truly matters to us and what we consider most precious. Does a single object have the power to represent a lost world? What is our sense of belonging defined by? And in the act of leaving\, when we are forced to abandon everything\, what remains? Together\, we will unravel the intricate stories woven into each item\, questioning the role of material possessions in shaping our collective understanding of home\, belonging\, and the human experience. \nJoin UA Ruhr\, Academy in Exile\, and Goethe-Institute for this reflective discussion\, exhibition\, and networking evening with faculty from TU Dortmund University\, University of Cincinnati\, and New York University. \nDate and Time: Wednesday\, October 18th\, 2023\, at 6:00 PM \nLocation: Goethe-Institut New York\, 30 Irving Place\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Gender\, Desire\, Embodiment
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade or so\, the emergence of terms like “non-binary” and expansions of the meaning of “queer sexuality\,” have indicated a kind of loosening up of social values and prohibitions around non-normative expressions of embodiment. At the same time\, however\, new legislation around the country and globally seeks to prevent young people from accessing trans affirmative care and to limit sex education. Concerns about the widespread adoption of trans and non-binary forms of embodiment has initiated a panic of sorts among some conservatives\, religious leaders and “family first” groups. \nPoet Meg Fernandes and cultural critic Jack Halberstam will discuss gender identification and sexual styles\, while sharing new ways of talking about identity\, the body\, obedience and disobedience\, community and its limits\, fiction and fantasy\, love\, life and desire with the audience. Fernandes will also read from her new book of poems\, I Do Everything I’m Told (2023). Moderated by Professor Irene Kacandes\, Dartmouth College. \nThis event is part of a series called “Humanities for Humans”\, presented in partnership with the Walter de Gruyter Foundation (Berlin). Across eight sessions — four in-person and four virtual — the series brings people together to help generate a better understanding of what the humanities are and what role they can play in today’s complex world. \nDate and Time: Wednesday\, October 18\, 2023 – 6:30-8:00 PM \nLocation: 1014 Fifth Avenue\, NY\, NY 10028 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:DWIH FUTURE FORUM: From Crisis to Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Join the FUTURE FORUM on October 20 in New York City for panels and networking to explore how we can build resilient societies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHosted by the German Center for Research and Innovation (DWIH) New York\, the FUTURE FORUM is an interactive platform for innovative leaders in science\, industry\, and policy. Established in 2019\, the FUTURE FORUM is the DWIH’s spotlight conference that promotes the exchange of ideas and perspectives between Germany and the U.S. The DWIH NY organizes each FUTURE FORUM around the DWIH annual topic\, which in 2023 is the resilient society. \nGlobal crises and their associated effects have a profound impact on social\, environmental\, and economic systems and infrastructures. \nPreparedness and a basic robustness in dealing with crises leads to a focus on resilience as both a process and a property – that is to anticipate and adapt to changing conditions in all areas of society. Ideally\, resilience does not mean a return to the original state\, but rather a continuous and transformative advancement. The FUTURE FORUM: From Crisis to Resilience asks: What is the staying power towards building resilient societies? \nFocus Topics: \n– Global Security & Crisis Governance \n– Energy & Resource Resilience \n– Climate Change\, Biodiversity & Planetary Health \n– Tech & Cyber Security \n– Democracy and the Individual \nProgram: \n12:30 PM: Doors open \n1 PM – 5 PM: Main Stage Presentations \n5 PM – 9 PM: Night Lab \nSnacks and beverages are available throughout the day. \nDate and Time: October 20\, 2023 – 12:30 PM to 9:00 PM \nLocation: 22 Vanderbilt (335 Madison Avenue\, New York\, NY 10017) \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Robert Storr\, Professor and Dean Emeritus of the Yale School or Art “The Hell of the Birds”
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with our current exhibition “Max Beckmann – The Formative Years: 1915-1925” Neue Galerie is delighted to host Robert Storr for a special lecture on Beckmann’s often discussed ambiguity. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“The Hell of the Birds” \nComing into his own in an era of trauma and dislocations – much like our present day – Max Beckmann was deeply ambivalent about the promises of “modernity\,” even as he was profoundly affected by the ruptures and conflicts of his moment and milieu. Caught between what philosopher Antonio Gramsci called “an old world that was dying and a new one that cannot be born (yet)\,” Beckmann turned away from more or less realistic representation toward claustrophobic\, heavily charged allegories of an apocalyptic present. This talk will range from his experiences in and renditions of World War I\, to his Neue Sachlichkeit depictions of Weimar Germany\, on through to his congested\, dialectical\, often multipanel portrayals of a world coming apart at the seams. \nDate and Time: Thursday\, October 26\, 2023; 6:30 PM \nLocation: Neue Galerie New York; 1048 Fifth Avenue; New York\, NY 10028 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Hubert Sauper’s “Epicentro” Screening and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:NYU’s Department of German and Deutsches Haus at NYU present a screening of Hubert Sauper’s Epicentro (Little Magnet Films\, 2020) and a conversation with the filmmaker. This event is co-presented with the Yale Film and Media Studies Program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Epicentro: \nEpicentro.\nDirected by Hubert Sauper. Produced by Groupe Deux\, KGP Films\, Little Magnet Films.\nA/F 2020\, 108 minutes\, in Spanish and English with English subtitles. \nFrom world-renowned documentarian Hubert Super—director of Sundance winner We Come as Friends and the Oscar-nominated Darwin’s Nightmare—comes Epicentro\, an immersive and metaphorical portrait of post-colonial\, “utopian” Cuba in the aftermath of the 1898 explosion of the USS Maine. This Big Bang ended Spanish colonial dominance in the Americas and ushered in the era of the American Empire and neo-colonialism. Simultaneously\, a powerful tool of conquest was born: cinema as propaganda.\nIn Epicentro\, Sauper explores a century of interventionism\, cycles of myth-making\, and the extraordinary people of Havana—particularly its children\, whom he calls “young prophets”—to interrogate time\, imperialism\, and cinema itself. \nAbout the participants: \nHubert Sauper was born in Kitzbühel\, Tyrolian Alps. After spending his childhood in Austria\, he lived in Great Britain\, the USA\, Tanzania\, Congo\, and South Sudan. His “home base” since the mid ’90s has been France\, and he has studied directing in Vienna and Paris (at the University of Performing Arts and the Univ. de Paris VIII).\nSauper’s sociopolitical and poetic films have won over 50 major international prizes\, among them awards at the Venice Film Festival\, Berlinale\, and Sundance Film Festival. He has also been honored by the César Awards\, the Austrian Academy Awards\, and the European Academy Awards. His documentary Darwin’s Nightmare (2004) was nominated for Best Documentary at the Oscars in 2006. \n“Hubert Sauper’s Epicentro Screening and Conversation” is funded by the DAAD from funds of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA). Additional support was provided by the Yale Film and Media Studies Program and the program’s Chair\, Fatima Naqvi. \nDate and Time: Thursday\, October 26th\, 2023\, from 5:30 PM-8:00 PM \nLocation: Deutsches Haus at NYU\, 42 Washington Mews\, New York\, New York 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:From Animals to Robots: How Transatlantic Neuroscience Advances Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Join the University of Cologne New York Office and partners for an upcoming in-person event featuring transatlantic research on how robotics and engineering can be advanced through neuroscience and the study of flexible animal behavior. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of the NRW-USA Year 2023-2024\, the University of Cologne New York Office together with the German Consulate New York\, the German Research Foundation (DFG) North America\, American Friends of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation\, and the German Center for Research and Innovation New York (DWIH) is hosting a panel discussion at the German House Auditorium in NYC on November 7\, 2023. \nHow are animals so remarkably effective in getting around in the world? A striking feature of animal behavior is its flexibility\, adaptability\, and resilience. Whether one is swatting away fruit flies\, admiring a squirrel scrambling up the trunk of a tree\, or trying to chase cockroaches out of an apartment\, the agility and speed with which animals can respond to avoid danger and achieve their goals is impressive. Understanding how the body and brain work together to create such adaptive behavior could create new technical solutions including novel\, autonomous robots. Such innovations can contribute to increasing our society’s resilience when dealing with global challenges. \nParticipants of this public panel discussion will hear from experts in the areas of neuroscience\, robotics\, and control who work together within the Communication\, Coordination and Control in Neuromechanical Systems (C3NS) network. C3NS is an innovative transatlantic research program\, co-funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) together with the German Research Foundation (DFG)\, as well as Canadian and UK partner organizations. It is part of NSF’s Novel Networks for Neuroscience (NeuroNex) project. \nJoin us to \n– Discover how robotics and engineering can be advanced through neuroscience and the study of flexible animal behavior \n– Experience the power of a transatlantic and interdisciplinary collaboration between North America and Europe at an exciting research frontier \n– Enjoy a networking reception following the panel \nOur Experts: \n● Prof. Dr. Ansgar Büschges\, University of Cologne \n● Prof. Dr. Roger Quinn\, Case Western Reserve University \n● Prof. Dr. Hillel Chiel\, Case Western University \n● Prof. Dr. Vicky Webster-Wood\, Carnegie Mellon University \n● Dr. Gesa Dinges\, West Virginia University \nModerated by Dr. Nina Gray\, New York University \n\nDate and Time: November 7th\, 2023 from 6 PM to 8 PM \nLocation: German House Auditorium\, 871 United Nations Plaza\, New York City \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Global Wagner: Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Global Wagner – From Bayreuth to the World is not a biography of Richard Wagner\, nor is it a musicological analysis of his work. This is a documentary dedicated solely to the world’s fascination with the man\, and an exploration of the question as to how such massive hype and world-wide cult following developed around this highly controversial artist. The film is a revealing feature-length study of life with Wagner’s legacy from one Bayreuth Festival to the next\, and we travel the world to meet devoted Wagnerians and those most intimately involved in commenting on and producing his work today. Directed by Axel Brüggemann\, in German and English\, featuring Katharina Wagner\, Christian Thielemann\, Alex Ross\, Valery Gergiev\, Plácido Domingo\, Piotr Beczała\, Barrie Kosky\, and Anja Harteros.
