SUMMARY:''Berlin Asian Diaspora Anthology Project:'' A Conversation with Selma Siew Li Bidlingmaier and Feng-Mei Herberer
DESCRIPTION:Deutsches Haus at NYU and Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU present “Berlin Asian Diaspora Anthology Project” a public lecture and conversation with Selma Siew Li Bidlingmaier\, DAAD Visiting Scholar and postdoc researcher and teaching fellow at the American Studies Department\, Humboldt University Berlin and Feng-Mei Heberer\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Cinema Studies at NYU. The talk will introduce the nascent Berlin Asian Diaspora Anthology Project and discusses the goals\, methods\, mediums\, as well as challenges facing this endeavor. \nContemporary public (his)stories of East\, South\, and South East Asians in Germany often tend to locate the community within disparate migratory “moments”\, particularly during the Cold War and the postwar era. The Vietnamese being the largest “Asian” community in Germany are most visible in public discourses. The history of GDR guest workers (“Gastarbeiter”)\, and refugees who came during the Vietnam War are well documented\, often telling larger histories of Germany’s postwar geopolitical positionality and role. However\, due to varying reasons\, little attention is given to other diasporas such as the Chinese\, Japanese\, Korean\, Indian\, Pakistani\, Thai\, and Filipinx. The histories of interconnections between the various diasporas that began as early as the 19th leaves a gap not only within the histories of Asians in Germany but also the historiography of Germany as a nation. \nIn 2020\, as Covid raged around the world\, anti-Asian racism and hate crimes soared in the US\, Canada\, and Europe. Asians were once again pitted as the perpetual foreigner and discourses of race and disease regained political and social currency. The Berlin Asian Diaspora Anthology Project emerged during this period to address hegemonic ideologies of Asian foreignness in Berlin and in Germany. The main goal of this project is to collect and publish forgotten cultural works by the Asian diaspora including literature\, correspondences\, photographs\, archival material that establishes these communities’ long presence in Berlin and Germany. \n“Berlin Asian Diaspora Anthology Project: A Conversation with Selma Siew Li Bidlingmaier” is funded by the DAAD from funds of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA). \nDate and Time: Tuesday\, September 26th\, 2023\, 6:00 PM-7:30 PM \nLocation: Deutsches Haus at NYU\, 42 Washington Mews\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Julian Radlmaier's ''Self-Criticism of a Bourgeois Dog'' Screening and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:NYU’s Department of German and Deutsches Haus at NYU present a screening of Julian Radlmaier’s “Self-Criticism of a Bourgeois Dog” (Selbstkritik eines bürgerlichen Hundes“) and a conversation with the filmmaker. This event is co-presented with the Yale Film and Media Studies Program. There will be an additional screening of Julian Radlmaier’s film ”Bloodsuckers – A Marxist Vampire Comedy“ at Columbia University on September 26. \nSelf-Criticism of a Bourgois Dog. Directed by Julian Radlmaier. Produced by Faktura Film. Germany\, 2017\, 99 minutes\, in German with English subtitles. \nA bourgeois dog confesses how he was transformed from being a filmmaker to being four-legged: Unable to find financing for his film\, Julian is forced to accept a job as a seasonal farmhand. At a party\, however\, he makes the young Canadian expat Camille believe that he’s going to do research for a communist fairy-tale film and offers her the leading part. To his great surprise\, she decides to accompany him\, sparking off Julian’s lurking romantic fantasies. Thus they arrive at the deceitfully idyllic scene of an exploitative apple plantation. While Julian finds the manual labour agonizing and fears the strange roommates in his humble container home\, Camille enthusiastically plunges into the alleged research and makes friends with Hong and Sancho\, two credulous proletarians in pursuit of happiness. For Julian\, it’s getting more and more difficult to act the communist filmmaker. And what’s more\, a hot-tempered model worker with American dreams gets in his way\, a mute monk with magical powers and a screw loose shows up\, the owner of the plantation accidentally gets killed\, and an attempted revolution ends up in confusion. At this moment\, however\, the sparrows in the trees come up with an unexpected plan… \n”Julian Radlmaier’s ‘Self-criticism of a Bourgeois Dog’ Screening and Conversation“ is funded by the DAAD from funds of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA). Additional support was provided by the Yale Film and Media Studies Program and the program’s Chair Fatima Naqvi\, and Jason Ooi from the film distribution company Crescendo House. \nDate and Time: Friday\, September 29th\, 2023\, 6:00 PM-7:30 PM \nLocation: Deutsches Haus at NYU\, 42 Washington Mews\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Kids Kino: Mission Ulja Funk
DESCRIPTION:Awarded Best Children’s Film at 2023 German Film Award\nThe German Film Office is pleased to announce Mission Ulja Funk as its first Kids Kino screening this fall. \nUnless otherwise stated\, all films in this series are suitable for general audiences and are presented in German with English subtitles. We recommend Mission Ulja Funk for children 8 years old and above. \nMission Ulja Funk\nTwelve-year-old Ulja Funk\, an aspiring astronomer\, has just discovered that a meteoroid is bound for Belarus. As the adults in her life refuse to listen\, she takes matters into her own hands by recruiting her classmate\, Henk\, for a road trip in a stolen hearse. SUMMARY:Current Forms of Disinformation\, Actors\, and Spheres of Infleunce
DESCRIPTION:Over the last decade\, widespread disinformation – distributed through the internet\, over social media\, and especially through messengers – has influenced our political systems and societies in an unprecedented way. When it comes to disinformation\, what is the current state of affairs? What have we learned about the resiliency of our institutions? Are we ready for the impact AI will have on already fragile systems? The American Council on Germany and the German Consulate General of New York are launching a new on-line series to discuss these questions. \nOn October 4\, at 11:00 am ET (17:00 CET)\, the American Council on Germany and the German Consulate General of New York will kick off the series with a virtual discussion on how actors use disinformation campaigns to influence public opinion\, divide societies\, and disrupt democratic processes. We will be joined by Lutz Güllner\, Head of Strategic Communications and Information Analysis at the European External Action Service\, and Nina Jankowicz\, Vice President at the Centre for Information Resilience and former Head of the Disinformation Governance Board of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. \nRegister here. \nLutz Güllner is the Head of Division for Strategic Communications and Information Analysis in the European External Action Service. He leads a team of about 40 persons dealing with issues related to disinformation and foreign manipulative interference. In his work\, he focuses on addressing disinformation threats for the EU and for the EU’s neighborhood region. Prior to his current position he served as Head of the EEAS’s foreign and security policy communication team (2017-2019) and as Head of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Trade’s communication team (2013-17). He was also Deputy Head of the Trade Strategy Unit and responsible for the coordination of EU-US trade and economic relations. In 2009 and 2010\, Mr. Güllner was spokesperson for the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy\, Catherine Ashton. He was also the Commission’s spokesperson for trade policy. In previous positions\, he was in charge of economic relations between the EU and Russia. Prior to joining the European Commission\, he worked as public affairs consultant in Brussels. \nNina Jankowicz is an internationally-recognized expert on disinformation and democratization and the author of two books: How to Lose the Information War (Bloomsbury 2020) and How to Be A Woman Online (Bloomsbury 2022)\, an examination of online abuse and disinformation and tips for fighting back. She currently serves as the Vice President at the UK-based Centre for Information Resilience\, a non-profit focused on countering disinformation. Ms. Jankowicz has advised governments\, international organizations\, and tech companies\, and testified before the U.S. Congress\, UK Parliament\, and European Parliament. \nIn 2022\, Ms. Jankowicz was appointed to lead the Disinformation Governance Board\, an intra-agency best practices and coordination entity at the Department of Homeland Security; she resigned the position after a sustained disinformation campaign caused the Biden Administration to abandon the project. From 2017-2022\, she held fellowships at the Wilson Center\, where she was affiliated with the Kennan Institute and the Science and Technology Innovation Program and led accessible\, actionable research about the effects of disinformation on women\, minorities\, democratic activists\, and freedom of expression around the world. In 2016-17\, she advised the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on disinformation and strategic communications under the auspices of a Fulbright-Clinton Public Policy Fellowship. Early in her career\, she managed democracy assistance programs to Russia and Belarus at the National Democratic Institute.

SUMMARY:''Kochanie\, Today I Bought Bread:'' A Conversation with Uljana Wolf\, Greg Nissan\, Valzhyna Mort\, and Ulrich Baer
DESCRIPTION:Deutsches Haus at NYU and World Poetry Books presents a reading and conversation about kochanie today i bought bread with the author and poet Uljana Wolf\, the translator Greg Nissan\, and the poet Valzhyna Mort. The conversation will be moderated by Ulrich Baer. \nIn kochanie\, today I bought bread\, Uljana Wolf crosses borders from East Germany into Poland\, from fairy tales to the tallying of land torn by fateful past\, from women’s voices “hibernating in documents\,” to Lavinia’s spilling forth of red language. Hailed by critics for its “brief strokes that open up a wide historical space in which political doom is still present\,” this book is a testament that the cartography we inherit is equal parts limit and dare. Wolf’s debut collection won the Peter Huchel Prize in 2006—she was its youngest recipient. Nearly 20 years later\, this bilingual edition—featuring a new introduction by Valzhyna Mort and Greg Nissan’s superbly-tuned translation—invites English-language readers into the “guest room” of poetry. \n“kochanie\, today i bought bread” is funded by the DAAD from funds of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA). Additional support and thanks goes to Matvei Yankelevich of World Poetry Books for all of his organisational support. \nDate and Time: Thursday\, October 5th\, 2023\, 6:00 PM-7:30 PM \nLocation: Deutsches Haus at NYU\, 42 Washington Mews\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Conflicted: An International Group Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:C24 Gallery is thrilled to announce “Conflicted\,” an international group exhibition featuring work by Hadas Amster\, Orit Ben Shitrit\, Jude Griebel\, Merav Kamel & Halil Balabin\, David Krippendorff\, Cal Lane\, İrfan Önürmen\, Ruth Patir\, Alexander Polzin\, Viktor Popović\, Abed Elmajid Shalabi\, and Patricia Waller\, representing Canada\, Chile\, Croatia\, England\, Germany\, Israel\, Italy\, Morocco\, Palestine\, and Turkey. \nThis exhibition of artwork from around the world meditates on the many layers of internal and external conflict. At a time when differing viewpoints can be enough to put us at complete odds with one another\, what does it mean to hold conflicting truths\, and how do we navigate the discomfort of these differences? How do we resist the urge to see things in terms of simple opposition? How do we manage to move through conflict and remain wholly intact? This selection of work will address these centuries old questions through a variety of voices mirroring contemporary culture. Collectively\, they represent a multifaceted dialogue opening up possibilities for exploring challenging topics in a more nuanced fashion. \nRunning alongside “Conflicted” is “Purgatory\,” a solo exhibition by Gabe BC that explores our current obsession with our cell phones as it questions the role of AI technology in the media and images we absorb. \nDate and Time: On view at C24 Gallery through October 5\, 2023. \nTuesday – Saturday\, 10 AM- 6 PM. \nLocation: C24 Gallery\, 560 West 24th Street\, New York\, NY 10011 \nMore Information:

SUMMARY:Public Presentation “German Refugee Rabbis in the United States After 1933”
DESCRIPTION:The research project “Trials and Transmission: Mapping the Legacy of the German Refugee Rabbinate” focuses on the creation of a digital prosopographic research portal exploring the cultural heritage and legacies of the German refugee rabbinate (over 250 refugee rabbis) in the United States. The aim is to present an analytic and communicative digital research tool including a digital edition of articles on these individuals discussing the agency this group gained in the definition of their heritage and legacy after 1945. Besides persecution\, flight\, exile\, and post-exile the database will allow to visualize this refugee group as a whole\, as individuals\, or as collective according to specific criteria\, such as region of birth\, religious affiliation\, political activity\, etc. As a research tool\, it will be able to analyze the mobility of the group\, the destruction of their intellectual centers\, and their reestablishment after emigration. The portal will provide a meta-structure to stimulate further research on this group and will find a permanent home and continuous maintenance at LMU Munich. \nThe DFG funded project German Refugee Rabbis in the United States 1933–1990 traces migration paths and careers of German rabbis who fled to the United States from Nazi Germany after 1933. It seeks to explore their impact on American Judaism\, American Jewish communities and their travels or returns to post-war Germany. It also makes available resources for further research on this group on both sides of the Atlantic. \nThe event is organized by the LMU-NYU Research Cooperation and is co-sponsored by the Leo Baeck Institute in New York\, the Wissenschaftliche Arbeitsgemeinschaft des LBI\, and the American Jewish Archives in Cincinnati. Additional support is provided by NYU’s Department of German. \nDate and Time: Tuesday\, October 10th\, 2023 from 6:00 PM-7:30 PM \nLocation: Deutsches Haus at NYU; 42 Washington Mews\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Dealing with Disinformation: How Is Disinformation Shifting Democratic Processes and International Relations?
DESCRIPTION:Join the American Council on Germany and the German Consulate General New York for the second installment of the series on “Dealing with Disinformation.” German diplomat and former journalist Ralf Beste and Melissa Fleming\, Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications at the United Nations\, will discuss the impact of disinformation on international relations during a webinar on Thursday\, October 12\, at 11:00 am ET (17:00 CET). \nDisinformation is a cause for tremendous concern to countries around the world – including democracies. Information manipulation has become more common – and far more sophisticated – in recent years. SUMMARY:Archtober at Neue Galerie Prof. Mark Wigley (Columbia University) “The Infinite Interior of Friedl Dicker: Vienna 1898 Auschwitz 1944 New York 2023”
DESCRIPTION:“The Infinite Interior of Friedl Dicker: Vienna 1898 Auschwitz 1944 New York 2023” \nOne of the first and strongest students at the Bauhaus in 1919\, Friedl Dicker was ultimately more Bauhaus than the Bauhaus—developing a unique trans-disciplinary mode of practice that crossed architecture\, interior design\, theater sets\, fashion\, textiles\, accessories\, painting\, photo-collage\, graphic design\, typography\, toys\, and pedagogy. This lecture explores the unique sense of interior that Dicker constructed\, an architecture to both defend people from a relentlessly brutal exterior world and to free individual creativity in daily life. Dicker’s gift was an unbinding interior\, an agile but ultimately fragile space that was systematically erased along with so many of those sheltered within it. Yet the space survives in lingering archival traces that are themselves defiant witnesses—and provocations for design in multiple contexts today. \nMark Wigley is Professor of Architecture and Dean Emeritus at Columbia University. He is a historian\, theorist\, and critic who explores the intersection of architecture\, art\, philosophy\, culture\, and technology. His recent books include: Konrad Wachsmann’s Television: Post-Architectural Transmissions; Passing Through Architecture: The 10 Years of Gordon Matta-Clark; Cutting Matta-Clark: The Anarchitecture Investigation; Are We Human? Notes on an Archaeology of Design (with Beatriz Colomina); and Buckminster Fuller Inc.: Architecture in the Age of Radio. He has curated exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art\, The Drawing Center\, Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art\, Het Nieuwe Instituut\, the Canadian Centre for Architecture\, and the Power Station of Art in Shanghai. \nDate and Time: Thursday\, October 12th\, 2023 at 6:30 PM \nLocation: Neue Galerie New York; 1048 Fifth Avenue; New York\, NY 10028 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Viennale Erste Bank Film Award Screenings: Eve Heller
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 7:30pm at Anthology Film Archives for a 90-minute foray into some of Heller’s most exciting\, ethereal\, and thrilling works. This screening will include Heller’s latest short film\, Singing in Oblivion (2021)\, along with Creme 21 (2013)\, Self-Examination Remote Control (1981/2009)\, Ruby Skin (2005)\, Behind This Soft Eclipse (2004)\, Her Glacial Speed(2001)\, Astor Place (1997)\, and Last Lost (1996). \nEve Heller’s films have established her as one of the great contemporary practitioners of the found-footage genre. Her work exemplifies cinema’s capacity for recording traces of experience\, conveying fragments of history\, and conjuring the psychological\, visual\, and emotional textures of dreamlike states. Her moving image works—constructed from educational movies\, newsreels\, and her own cinematography—engage with personal and shared histories and exist at the crossroads of the intangible and the tactile. These films are suffused with the immediacy of lived experience—attentive to the physical reality of people\, animals\, and objects represented in the imagery—while equally sensitive to the materiality of the film medium itself\, channeling an elusive\, inscrutable domain of memories and emotional echoes. Heller fractures\, juxtaposes\, and distills her source materials such that new\, more evocative and resonant meanings and ideas emerge from the colliding fragments. \nHeller has demonstrated a continuing commitment to working with 16mm and 35mm film\, a choice that transcends a fetishistic or nostalgic attachment to the analog medium by emphasizing and making use of film’s unique ability to convey a palpable trace of the sensible world. Heller’s latest film\, Singing in Oblivion\, is emblematic of this commitment. It uses a variety of techniques—observational photography\, found imagery\, photograms\, and rich sound design—to conjure a meditation on death\, memory\, and transience. Centering on a Jewish Cemetery in the Vienna district of Währing\, which was partially destroyed by the Nazis and today exists in a state of decay\, Heller combines her own ghostly footage of the site with photograms of organic material\, as well as fragmentary imagery reprinted from glass negatives she discovered at a flea market in Vienna. Like so many of Heller’s works\, the film itself becomes a kind of photogram: a physical object on which now-vanished lives have left their imprint\, speaking equally to presence and absence. \n“The best of Heller’s films…are as mysterious and subtle as their titles\, weaving ghostly\, mainly black and white 16mm visions in which time seems suspended. At once ethereal and almost cloyingly vivid\, these oneiric works linger in the mind long after viewing.” –Maximilian Le Cain \nDate and Time: Monday\, October 16th\, 2023\, from 7:30 PM-9:30 PM \nTuesday\, October 17th\, 2023\, from 7:30 PM-9:30 PM \nLocation: Anthology Film Archives; 32 2nd Ave\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:What We Brought with Us - Panel Discussion & Exhibition on Academic Freedom and Objects of Memory
DESCRIPTION:University Alliance Ruhr and the Goethe-Institut are organizing an opening panel discussion and exhibition in New York City. “What We Brought with Us” is an exhibition developed by Academy in Exile at TU Dortmund University\, one of the three universities that comprise the University Alliance Ruhr. \nThe exhibition presents images of objects carried by some of Academy in Exile’s fellows when they fled from their countries of origin to Germany to where they were hosted by University of Duisburg-Essen\, Free University of Berlin\, Forum Transregionale Studien and Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) Essen. \nThe opening panel of the exhibition with Prof. Dr. Vanessa Agnew\, Prof. Kate A. Bonansinga\, Prof. Dr. Kader Konuk and Prof. Dr. Ulrich Baer serves as an engaging exploration of the significance and emotional resonance carried by the objects refugees bring with them when fleeing their homelands. “What We Brought with Us” invites us to question our relationship with possessions and each other. It prompts us to reflect on what truly matters to us and what we consider most precious. Does a single object have the power to represent a lost world? What is our sense of belonging defined by? And in the act of leaving\, when we are forced to abandon everything\, what remains? Together\, we will unravel the intricate stories woven into each item\, questioning the role of material possessions in shaping our collective understanding of home\, belonging\, and the human experience. \nJoin UA Ruhr\, Academy in Exile\, and Goethe-Institute for this reflective discussion\, exhibition\, and networking evening with faculty from TU Dortmund University\, University of Cincinnati\, and New York University. \nDate and Time: Wednesday\, October 18th\, 2023\, at 6:00 PM \nLocation: Goethe-Institut New York\, 30 Irving Place\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:
