SUMMARY:Conflicted: An International Group Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:C24 Gallery is thrilled to announce “Conflicted\,” an international group exhibition featuring work by Hadas Amster\, Orit Ben Shitrit\, Jude Griebel\, Merav Kamel & Halil Balabin\, David Krippendorff\, Cal Lane\, İrfan Önürmen\, Ruth Patir\, Alexander Polzin\, Viktor Popović\, Abed Elmajid Shalabi\, and Patricia Waller\, representing Canada\, Chile\, Croatia\, England\, Germany\, Israel\, Italy\, Morocco\, Palestine\, and Turkey. \nThis exhibition of artwork from around the world meditates on the many layers of internal and external conflict. At a time when differing viewpoints can be enough to put us at complete odds with one another\, what does it mean to hold conflicting truths\, and how do we navigate the discomfort of these differences? How do we resist the urge to see things in terms of simple opposition? How do we manage to move through conflict and remain wholly intact? This selection of work will address these centuries old questions through a variety of voices mirroring contemporary culture. Collectively\, they represent a multifaceted dialogue opening up possibilities for exploring challenging topics in a more nuanced fashion. \nRunning alongside “Conflicted” is “Purgatory\,” a solo exhibition by Gabe BC that explores our current obsession with our cell phones as it questions the role of AI technology in the media and images we absorb. \nDate and Time: On view at C24 Gallery through October 5\, 2023. \nTuesday – Saturday\, 10 AM- 6 PM. \nLocation: C24 Gallery\, 560 West 24th Street\, New York\, NY 10011 \nMore Information:

SUMMARY:''Kochanie\, Today I Bought Bread:'' A Conversation with Uljana Wolf\, Greg Nissan\, Valzhyna Mort\, and Ulrich Baer
DESCRIPTION:Deutsches Haus at NYU and World Poetry Books presents a reading and conversation about kochanie today i bought bread with the author and poet Uljana Wolf\, the translator Greg Nissan\, and the poet Valzhyna Mort. The conversation will be moderated by Ulrich Baer. \nIn kochanie\, today I bought bread\, Uljana Wolf crosses borders from East Germany into Poland\, from fairy tales to the tallying of land torn by fateful past\, from women’s voices “hibernating in documents\,” to Lavinia’s spilling forth of red language. Hailed by critics for its “brief strokes that open up a wide historical space in which political doom is still present\,” this book is a testament that the cartography we inherit is equal parts limit and dare. Wolf’s debut collection won the Peter Huchel Prize in 2006—she was its youngest recipient. Nearly 20 years later\, this bilingual edition—featuring a new introduction by Valzhyna Mort and Greg Nissan’s superbly-tuned translation—invites English-language readers into the “guest room” of poetry. \n“kochanie\, today i bought bread” is funded by the DAAD from funds of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA). Additional support and thanks goes to Matvei Yankelevich of World Poetry Books for all of his organisational support. \nDate and Time: Thursday\, October 5th\, 2023\, 6:00 PM-7:30 PM \nLocation: Deutsches Haus at NYU\, 42 Washington Mews\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Current Forms of Disinformation\, Actors\, and Spheres of Infleunce
DESCRIPTION:Over the last decade\, widespread disinformation – distributed through the internet\, over social media\, and especially through messengers – has influenced our political systems and societies in an unprecedented way. When it comes to disinformation\, what is the current state of affairs? What have we learned about the resiliency of our institutions? Are we ready for the impact AI will have on already fragile systems? The American Council on Germany and the German Consulate General of New York are launching a new on-line series to discuss these questions. \nOn October 4\, at 11:00 am ET (17:00 CET)\, the American Council on Germany and the German Consulate General of New York will kick off the series with a virtual discussion on how actors use disinformation campaigns to influence public opinion\, divide societies\, and disrupt democratic processes. We will be joined by Lutz Güllner\, Head of Strategic Communications and Information Analysis at the European External Action Service\, and Nina Jankowicz\, Vice President at the Centre for Information Resilience and former Head of the Disinformation Governance Board of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. \nRegister here. \nLutz Güllner is the Head of Division for Strategic Communications and Information Analysis in the European External Action Service. He leads a team of about 40 persons dealing with issues related to disinformation and foreign manipulative interference. In his work\, he focuses on addressing disinformation threats for the EU and for the EU’s neighborhood region. Prior to his current position he served as Head of the EEAS’s foreign and security policy communication team (2017-2019) and as Head of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Trade’s communication team (2013-17). He was also Deputy Head of the Trade Strategy Unit and responsible for the coordination of EU-US trade and economic relations. In 2009 and 2010\, Mr. Güllner was spokesperson for the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy\, Catherine Ashton. He was also the Commission’s spokesperson for trade policy. In previous positions\, he was in charge of economic relations between the EU and Russia. Prior to joining the European Commission\, he worked as public affairs consultant in Brussels. \nNina Jankowicz is an internationally-recognized expert on disinformation and democratization and the author of two books: How to Lose the Information War (Bloomsbury 2020) and How to Be A Woman Online (Bloomsbury 2022)\, an examination of online abuse and disinformation and tips for fighting back. She currently serves as the Vice President at the UK-based Centre for Information Resilience\, a non-profit focused on countering disinformation. Ms. Jankowicz has advised governments\, international organizations\, and tech companies\, and testified before the U.S. Congress\, UK Parliament\, and European Parliament. \nIn 2022\, Ms. Jankowicz was appointed to lead the Disinformation Governance Board\, an intra-agency best practices and coordination entity at the Department of Homeland Security; she resigned the position after a sustained disinformation campaign caused the Biden Administration to abandon the project. From 2017-2022\, she held fellowships at the Wilson Center\, where she was affiliated with the Kennan Institute and the Science and Technology Innovation Program and led accessible\, actionable research about the effects of disinformation on women\, minorities\, democratic activists\, and freedom of expression around the world. In 2016-17\, she advised the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on disinformation and strategic communications under the auspices of a Fulbright-Clinton Public Policy Fellowship. Early in her career\, she managed democracy assistance programs to Russia and Belarus at the National Democratic Institute.

SUMMARY:Kids Kino: Mission Ulja Funk
DESCRIPTION:Awarded Best Children’s Film at 2023 German Film Award\nThe German Film Office is pleased to announce Mission Ulja Funk as its first Kids Kino screening this fall. \nUnless otherwise stated\, all films in this series are suitable for general audiences and are presented in German with English subtitles. We recommend Mission Ulja Funk for children 8 years old and above. \nMission Ulja Funk\nTwelve-year-old Ulja Funk\, an aspiring astronomer\, has just discovered that a meteoroid is bound for Belarus. As the adults in her life refuse to listen\, she takes matters into her own hands by recruiting her classmate\, Henk\, for a road trip in a stolen hearse. The unlikely duo has 20 hours to cross Germany and Poland and reach the impact site\, but Ulja’s grandmother and her church community quickly catch up with them… \nA quirky\, fast-paced chase begins\, with colorful stops along the way. On their winding journey\, moralizers are exposed as hypocrites\, and divided families\, friends\, lovers\, and nations are reunited. \n“Fresh\, joyful\, and never patronizing the complex\, fearless protagonist\, Mission Ulja Funk feels like one of those movies for which it feels the phrase ‘for the young and young at heart’ was invented.” (Alexandra Heller-Nicholas\, Alliance for Women Film Journalists) \nMission Ulja Funk won the 2023 German Film Award for Best Children’s Film. \nAbout this movie\nDir. Barbara Kronenberg\nGermany/Luxembourg/Poland\, 2021\n92 minutes\nWith Romy Lou Janinhoff\, Jonas Oeßel\, Hildegard Schroedter\, Luc Feit\, Anja Schneider\, Ivan Shvedoff\, Christina Große\, Janina Elkin\, Peter Trabner\, and Martina Eitner-Acheampong

SUMMARY:Julian Radlmaier's ''Self-Criticism of a Bourgeois Dog'' Screening and Conversation
DESCRIPTION:NYU’s Department of German and Deutsches Haus at NYU present a screening of Julian Radlmaier’s “Self-Criticism of a Bourgeois Dog” (Selbstkritik eines bürgerlichen Hundes“) and a conversation with the filmmaker. This event is co-presented with the Yale Film and Media Studies Program. There will be an additional screening of Julian Radlmaier’s film ”Bloodsuckers – A Marxist Vampire Comedy“ at Columbia University on September 26. \nSelf-Criticism of a Bourgois Dog. Directed by Julian Radlmaier. Produced by Faktura Film. Germany\, 2017\, 99 minutes\, in German with English subtitles. \nA bourgeois dog confesses how he was transformed from being a filmmaker to being four-legged: Unable to find financing for his film\, Julian is forced to accept a job as a seasonal farmhand. At a party\, however\, he makes the young Canadian expat Camille believe that he’s going to do research for a communist fairy-tale film and offers her the leading part. To his great surprise\, she decides to accompany him\, sparking off Julian’s lurking romantic fantasies. Thus they arrive at the deceitfully idyllic scene of an exploitative apple plantation. While Julian finds the manual labour agonizing and fears the strange roommates in his humble container home\, Camille enthusiastically plunges into the alleged research and makes friends with Hong and Sancho\, two credulous proletarians in pursuit of happiness. For Julian\, it’s getting more and more difficult to act the communist filmmaker. And what’s more\, a hot-tempered model worker with American dreams gets in his way\, a mute monk with magical powers and a screw loose shows up\, the owner of the plantation accidentally gets killed\, and an attempted revolution ends up in confusion. At this moment\, however\, the sparrows in the trees come up with an unexpected plan… \n”Julian Radlmaier’s ‘Self-criticism of a Bourgeois Dog’ Screening and Conversation“ is funded by the DAAD from funds of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA). Additional support was provided by the Yale Film and Media Studies Program and the program’s Chair Fatima Naqvi\, and Jason Ooi from the film distribution company Crescendo House. \nDate and Time: Friday\, September 29th\, 2023\, 6:00 PM-7:30 PM \nLocation: Deutsches Haus at NYU\, 42 Washington Mews\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:''Berlin Asian Diaspora Anthology Project:'' A Conversation with Selma Siew Li Bidlingmaier and Feng-Mei Herberer
DESCRIPTION:Deutsches Haus at NYU and Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU present “Berlin Asian Diaspora Anthology Project” a public lecture and conversation with Selma Siew Li Bidlingmaier\, DAAD Visiting Scholar and postdoc researcher and teaching fellow at the American Studies Department\, Humboldt University Berlin and Feng-Mei Heberer\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Cinema Studies at NYU. The talk will introduce the nascent Berlin Asian Diaspora Anthology Project and discusses the goals\, methods\, mediums\, as well as challenges facing this endeavor. \nContemporary public (his)stories of East\, South\, and South East Asians in Germany often tend to locate the community within disparate migratory “moments”\, particularly during the Cold War and the postwar era. The Vietnamese being the largest “Asian” community in Germany are most visible in public discourses. The history of GDR guest workers (“Gastarbeiter”)\, and refugees who came during the Vietnam War are well documented\, often telling larger histories of Germany’s postwar geopolitical positionality and role. However\, due to varying reasons\, little attention is given to other diasporas such as the Chinese\, Japanese\, Korean\, Indian\, Pakistani\, Thai\, and Filipinx. The histories of interconnections between the various diasporas that began as early as the 19th leaves a gap not only within the histories of Asians in Germany but also the historiography of Germany as a nation. \nIn 2020\, as Covid raged around the world\, anti-Asian racism and hate crimes soared in the US\, Canada\, and Europe. Asians were once again pitted as the perpetual foreigner and discourses of race and disease regained political and social currency. The Berlin Asian Diaspora Anthology Project emerged during this period to address hegemonic ideologies of Asian foreignness in Berlin and in Germany. The main goal of this project is to collect and publish forgotten cultural works by the Asian diaspora including literature\, correspondences\, photographs\, archival material that establishes these communities’ long presence in Berlin and Germany. \n“Berlin Asian Diaspora Anthology Project: A Conversation with Selma Siew Li Bidlingmaier” is funded by the DAAD from funds of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA). \nDate and Time: Tuesday\, September 26th\, 2023\, 6:00 PM-7:30 PM \nLocation: Deutsches Haus at NYU\, 42 Washington Mews\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:World premiere of a new work entitled\, Doppelganger
DESCRIPTION:Composed in 1828 in Franz Schubert‘s final days\, Schwanengesang (Swan Song) traverses a myriad of emotions. Sitting at the pinnacle of a vocalist’s repertory\, these emotive works are given a thrilling new life in the world premiere of a theatrical staging by one of opera’s most adventurous directors\, Claus Guth. \nPerformed by world-renowned tenor Jonas Kaufmann with his long-time collaborator pianist Helmut Deutsch\, the heart-melting collection of songs is amplified by additional Schubert repertory\, an evocative soundscape\, and transformative light and video projections to create a production that is part performance and part installation art. Named for the last song “Der Doppelgänger\,” in which a soldier sees themselves and comes to terms with the reality that they did not return from war\, this Armory commission beautifully explores the hunger for life and its beauty and the idea that death is not a sudden moment but a last journey. \nDate and Time: September 22-28\, 2023 (Premiere September 22nd at 8 PM) \nLocation: Park Avenue Armory\, 643 Park Avenue\, New York\, NY 10065 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:An Evening with New Chamber Ballet
DESCRIPTION:Four ballets by Miro Magloire\, to live music by Maurice Ravel\, Pierre Boulez\, Beat Furrer and Wong Foo Jeng. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGerman-born choreographer Miro Magloire opens his New Chamber Ballet’s 2023-24 season with four dances set to music by Maurice Ravel\, Pierre Boulez\, and contemporary composers Beat Furrer and Wong Foo Jeng\, on September 22 & 23\, 7:30 PM\, at the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn. \nIn A Simple Black Dress\, originally premiered in 2010 to celebrate Pierre Boulez’s 85th birthday\, is set to the composer’s virtuoso violin solo Anthèmes. The mysterious quality of the dance comes from the dancer wearing only one pointe shoe\, an imbalance that results in a dynamically off-kilter experience for the performer. \nThe somber duet Voicelessness is set to music by Swiss composer Beat Furrer. “Voicelessness is heavy\,” reviewer Melanie Brown said about the ballet’s 2015 premiere\, “but smoothly choreographed. [The dancers] are joined near constantly\, performing demanding partner work that borders on acrobatic\, and doing it seamlessly.” (Stagebudy.com) \nDjazz is a whirlwind ballet to music by Maurice Ravel. In a review of its 2016 premiere\, Juan Michael Porter called it “a resounding success. Maurice Ravel’s Violin Sonata No. 2 has never sounded or looked so good… Mr. Magloire is an absolute magician when it comes to trios… Add this piece to your must see list; it is definitely a gem.” (Broadwayworld.com) \nThe program is completed by Azalea\, premiered earlier this year and set to axis/to imagine for violin and piano by New York-based contemporary Malaysian composer Wong Foo Jeng. \nPerformers include the dancers Anabel Alpert\, Megan Foley\, Nicole McGinnis\, Amber Neff\, Rachele Perla\, and Kayla Schmitt; as well as Doori Na (violin) and Melody Fader (piano). \n“Miro Magloire devises ingenious chamber works\, focused on the intimate interaction of music and movement\, paired with carefully chosen pieces that are played live by pianist and violinist.” – The New Yorker \nTickets: $38 \nThis performance is supported by the Amphion Foundation. \nDate and Time: Friday\, September 22th and Saturday\, September 23rd at 7:30 PM \nLocation: James and Martha Duffy Performance Space at the Mark Morris Dance Center \n3 Lafayette Avenue\, Brooklyn\, NY 11217 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Goethe-Institut Film Screening: Sam – A Saxon
DESCRIPTION:Special screening & masterclass session with the cast and production team of the groundbreaking series\nThe German Film Office is pleased to present a special screening and masterclass session with the cast and production team of the groundbreaking series Sam – A Saxon based on the incredible true story of Samuel Njankouo Meffire\, East Germany’s first Black policeman. The event will highlight the groundbreaking impact the series has had on the Afro-German and Black communities in Germany\, and the opportunities it sets out to create for underrepresented and underserved voices in the industry. \nThe seven-part series available to stream exclusively on Hulu follows Sam (Malick Bauer) who joins the police force after his father’s murder. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989\, he becomes the face of an anti-racism campaign and a media sensation\, catapulting him into a newly formed police squad with the mission to squash the rising tide of neo-Nazis in the post-communist East. His fame and success as a Nazi hunter are not appreciated by everyone. As his journey takes a dark turn\, he finds himself framed as an internationally wanted criminal and branded Germany’s ‘public enemy number one’. \nThrough Sam’s eyes\, the series allows audiences to experience his fight for recognition\, justice\, and a place to call home in the wild years following German reunification. \nSam – A Saxon combines an outstanding and diverse team both behind and in front of the camera\, with the following cast and crew members confirmed to appear at the Goethe-Institut New York: Samuel Meffire; lead actor Malick Bauer (as Sam Meffire); actor Ivy Quainoo (as Jenny); actor Paula Essam Baumert (as Sabine); creator\, showrunner\, head writer\, and executive producer Jörg Winger; creator\, actor\, and executive producer Tyron Ricketts; and creator\, head writer\, executive producer Chris Silber. A masterclass session\, moderated by Alexis Clark\, Assistant Professor at the Columbia School of Journalism\, will follow a screening of the series’ first two episodes. \nPresented by:\nPresented in collaboration with Black German Heritage and Research Association\, Columbia University School of Journalism\, and Big Window Productions\, a label of UFA Fiction.

SUMMARY:“A question of taste: Colonial aesthetics\, political affects\, and taste tanks:” A lecture by Ulrike Bergermann
DESCRIPTION:Deutsches Haus at NYU presents “A Question of Taste. Colonial Aesthetics\, Political Affects\, and Taste Tanks” a public lecture and conversation with Ulrike Bergermann\, Professor of Media Studies and Katrin Köppert\, Assistant Professor for Art History and Popular Cultures. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDeutsches Haus at NYU presents “A Question of Taste. Colonial Aesthetics\, Political Affects\, and Taste Tanks” a public lecture and conversation with Ulrike Bergermann\, DAAD Visiting Scholar and Professor of Media Studies at the University of Art in Braunschweig\, and Katrin Köppert\, Assistant Professor for Art History and Popular Cultures at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts. \nTaste has a history\, or rather many – personal\, embodied histories as well as philosophical and colonial histories. A new understanding of taste emerged in the aesthetics of the enlightenment\, while colonialism and enslavement provided new experiences of taste and ‘having taste’. Following on from this\, and with a glance to the euro-american story of cocoa\, we might think of a need to not only “decolonize the mind” (Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o) but also the senses. With the help of the queerfeminist concept of “Feel Tanks” and current theories of collectivity\, taste\, and affect\, I discuss the idea of “Taste Tanks” for a disruption of the sensible. \nDate and Time: Thursday\, September 21st 2023\, 6:00 PM-7:30 PM \nLocation: Deutsches Haus at NYU\, 42 Washington Mews\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Kristina Lunz and Enuma Okoro on Foreign Policy\, Climate\, and Feminism
DESCRIPTION:Two days after the UN General Assembly in New York City\, 1014 presents Financial Times columnist Enuma Okoro and Kristina Lunz\, co-founder of the Centre for Feminist Foreign Policy\, in conversation about our chances to improve global climate policy and create a more caring international order. They will discuss feminist foreign policy and the accelerating climate crisis with each other and the audience. \nKristina Lunz will give insights into her latest book “The Future of Foreign Policy is Feminist”\, which will be published in English later this year. While the book is not yet available in the United States\, three copies will be raffled to the audience during the event. \nKristina Lunz and her “Centre for Feminist Foreign Policy” are trying to change that. The political scientist\, activist and entrepreneur thinks peace\, human rights and justice together with foreign policy and wants to initiate a paradigm shift: She counters power play and military muscle games with mediation in peace negotiations\, feminist power analyses and climate justice. Realpolitik is exchanged for utopias\, and there are just as many women ambassadors as ambassadors. In this way\, the antagonism of nations can finally be replaced\, and everyone will be able to live in greater security and with fewer conflicts. \nEnuma Okoro is a Nigerian-American author\, journalist\, lecturer\, and cultural curator. She is a weekly columnist for the Financial Times weekend newspaper. Her column\, “The Art of Life\,” reflects on the intersection of art\, philosophy\, spirituality\, culture and how we live. Her broader research and writing interests include considering how the arts\, intersectional feminism\, philosophy\, language and knowledge theory\, theology and contemplative eco-spirituality speak into the study of the human condition\, how we relate to the more-than-human\, and how we accumulate and produce knowledge. \nShe is convinced that stories\, through their varying mediums\, are how we challenge old narratives\, free our imaginations\, and tell new and expanded truths that shift perceptions and instigate change. \nVENUE ACCESSIBILITY \nUnfortunately\, 1014 Fifth Avenue is in the process of being refurbished\, and is not fully accessible in its current state. We apologize to our guests and kindly ask you to contact j.isaacs@1014.nyc if you need further information or assistance. We will do our best to enable everyone to join us.

SUMMARY:Book Presentation: The Art of Assembly
DESCRIPTION:In his book The Art of Assembly. Political Theatre Today curator and author Florian Malzacher surveys theatre today to demonstrate its political potential in both form and content. Drawing on numerous examples from around the world in performance\, visual art\, and activist art\, he examines works that draw on the particular possibilities of theatre to navigate the space between representation and participation\, at once playfully and with sincerity. In a time of wide-ranging crisis\, The Art of Assembly is a plea for a strong definition of the political and for a theatre that is not content merely to reflect the world’s ills but instead acts to change them. \nFlorian Malzacher is a curator\, writer\, and dramaturg\, as well as the host of The Art of Assembly\, a series of talks about the potential of gathering in art\, activism\, and politics (since 2021). He was artistic director of Impulse Theater Festival in Cologne\, Dusseldorf\, and Mülheim an der Ruhr (2013–2017)\, and co-curator of the multidisciplinary arts festival steirischer herbst in Graz\, Austria (2006–2012). He is co-author and co-editor of numerous publications on contemporary theatre\, curating performing arts and the relationship between art and politics. His texts have been translated into more than fifteen languages. \nClaire Bishop is a critic and professor in the PhD Program in Art History at the Graduate Center\, City University of New York. SUMMARY:Two at 1014: Kristina Lunz and Enuma Okoro on Foreign Policy\, Climate\, and Feminism
DESCRIPTION:Two days after the UN General Assembly in New York City\, 1014 presents Financial Times columnist Enuma Okoro and Kristina Lunz\, co-founder of the Centre for Feminist Foreign Policy\, in conversation about chances to improve global climate policy and creating a more caring international order. \n\n\n\nEnuma Okoro is a Nigerian-American author\, journalist\, lecturer\, and cultural curator.
