SUMMARY:Two at 1014: How Liberal is the Future? Positioning Democracy in the Time to Come
DESCRIPTION:Alexander Görlach and philosopher Markus Gabriel discuss the foundations of a liberal anthropology: Can people have freedom\, and if so\, how much? Does technology help or does it impose invisible shackles on humankind? Ultimately\, the “elephant in the room” is the question of whether liberal democracy has a future. \nMarkus Gabriel is a German philosopher and author at the University of Bonn. He holds the chair in epistemology\, modern\, and contemporary philosophy at the University of Bonn and also serves as the Director of its International Centre for Philosophy. He works mainly in epistemology and metaphysics (ontology) drawing his inspirations from the history of philosophy (in particular\, 19th century Post-Kantian philosophy\, Heidegger\, and Wittgenstein). He has a particular interest in problems of skepticism and their history. His recent books are Transcendental Ontology: Essays in German Idealism and Die Erkenntnis der Welt. Eine Einführung in die Erkenntnistheorie (Knowledge of the World. An Introduction to Epistemology). \nAlexander Görlach is an adjunct professor to NYU Gallatin School where he teaches democratic theory. SUMMARY:“'Händler der Geheimnisse': An Evening with Elisabeth Bronfen and Atina Grossmann”
DESCRIPTION:The Department of German at NYU and Deutsches Haus at NYU present a reading (in German) by Elisabeth Bronfen from her novel\, Händler der Geheimnisse (Limmat Verlag\, 2023); followed by a conversation (in English) – about Bronfen’s thought process and writing practice\, and how this novel fits in with her scholarly research – with Atina Grossman. \nSpy story and family drama Fifty years after the end of World War II\, Jewish-American veteran George Bromfield dies suspiciously in a New York City hospital. Could it be that his second wife hastened his death? While trying to uncover the mysterious circumstances of his death\, his daughter Eva and her brother Max dig deeper and deeper into their father’s mysterious past. The siblings go to Munich and New York to find out why their father returned to Bavaria after the end of the war and how this pertains to his friendship with a portrait painter and Nazi collaborator. Elisabeth Bronfen skillfully combines a spy story with a family drama and depicts the after-effects of a culture of secrecy that characterized the post-war period from 1945 onwards. \n“’Händler der Geheimnisse:’ An Evening with Elisabeth Bronfen and Atina Grossmann” is funded by the DAAD from funds of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA). \nDate and Time: Monday\, September 11th 2023\, 5:00 PM-6:30 PM \nLocation: Deutsches Haus at NYU\, 42 Washington Mews\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Timothy Garton Ash: 'From Post-War Europe to Post-Wall Europe - and Back
DESCRIPTION:The Center for European and Mediterranean Studies and the Deutsches Haus at NYU are pleased to announce the presentation of the book Homelands: A Personal History of Europe by the renowned British historian Timothy Garton Ash. In his new book\, Ash gives a unique account of the history of Europe since 1945\, drawing on his extensive personal notes from 50 years of events witnessed\, places visited\, and historymakers encountered (from Margaret Thatcher to Vladimir Putin) to chart the rise and then faltering of the quest for a ‘Europe whole and free’. \nIn this lecture\, Professor Garton Ash will extend the analysis in Homelands to offer an interpretation of how Europe progressed from the post-War period (famously analysed by Tony Judt) to what he calls the post-Wall period. And why it then regressed\, in a ‘downward turn’ after 2008\, culminating in Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 – beginning the largest war in Europe since 1945. What did Europe get right? Where did it go wrong? Why? \n“Timothy Garton Ash: ‘From Post-War Europe to Post-Wall Europe – and Back’” is funded by the DAAD from funds of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA). \nDate and Time: Tuesday\, September 12th 2023\, 4:00 PM-5:30 PM \nLocation: Deutsches Haus at NYU\, 42 Washington Mews\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Tales of a Phoenix: The Letting Go Project
DESCRIPTION:Tales of a Phoenix: The Letting Go Project is a visual art exhibition and durational performance that harnesses the power of ritual to bring together women from across the world in a unified release of old patterns that no longer serve their personal growth. Featured by the UN and supported by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the ongoing project is now presented on Times Square. \nOver the past three years\, women have contributed pieces of fabric inscribed with what they wish to let go of. In a series of meditative performances\, Schnitzler has stitched these testimonies together into a room-filling skirt\, representing the global feminine voice. The project will culminate in a ritual dance performance in which Schnitzler wears the skirt radiating with these women’s collective energy\, then publicly destroy the skirt in a powerful symbol of release and letting go\, currently scheduled for summer 2024. \nDuring this outdoor event series\, Schnitzler will be sitting at the entrance of Anita’s Way\, a block passage on 42nd Street. Quietly stitching\, she is a poetic juxtaposition to the hustle and bustle of Times Square. Female-identifying passersby are invited participate by using a fabric piece provided on site\, which will then be added to the ever-growing skirt. \nTales of a Phoenix: The Letting Go Project is made possible\, in part\, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. Further support was provided by Chashama\, Williamsburg Art & Historical Center\, Grove 34\, and The Feminist Art Project. \nDate and Time: September 12th – October 13th\, 2023; Tuesdays-Fridays 2-5 PM (weather permitting) \nLocation: Anita’s Way\, 42nd Street btw. SUMMARY:Time for a Paradigm Shift: Rethinking Alzheimer’s Disease Research
DESCRIPTION:In his latest book\, Alzheimer’s Disease Research: What Has Guided Research So Far and Why It Is High Time for a Paradigm Shift\, neuroscientist Christian Behl outlines the history of Alzheimer’s research up to the present day and criticizes that for too long research has focused on one particular hypothesis\, the so-called “amyloid-cascade-hypothesis\,” and has not adequately followed a wider range of promising research paths. From the work of the disease’s namesake Aloysius Alzheimer 100 years ago\, to the most recent drug developments and controversies of the last decades\, Behl tracks how much of the research has almost exclusively concentrated on the role of amyloid beta peptide\, a key component of plaques found in the brain of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease.\nBehl suggests that it is time to re-evaluate the “amyloid cascade hypothesis” and the actual role of amyloid beta peptide in the disease. He presents a number of alternative disease hypotheses and raises pertinent questions about Alzheimer’s disease research strategies\, the funding landscape\, and the too narrow focus on one dominating hypothesis.\n\n\n\n\nProf. Dr. Behl will introduce his book\, and then dive into a discussion with Dr. Tia Powell. The discussion will address various topics surrounding Alzheimer’s disease research including the following questions: \n\nWhy are the exact causes of Alzheimer’s disease still in the dark\, despite the immense\, global research efforts in academia as well as in the pharmaceutical industry?\nWhy has the majority of an entire research field kept focusing on a single hypothesis that establishes the deposition of the amyloid beta peptide in the brain as the key trigger of Alzheimer’s pathology\, even though this concept has still not been convincingly proven in the clinics?\nAre there other hypotheses that might explain the pathogenesis of this complex brain disease\, and if so\, why were these perspectives not adequately followed?\n\n\n\n\n\nExperts\nChristian Behl\, Professor of Pathobiochemistry\, University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz \nTia Powell\, Professor of Epidemiology and Psychiatry\, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center \n\n\n\n\nGenerously Supported by:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDisclaimer\nThe views and opinions expressed by the speakers do not necessarily reflect those of the DWIH New York and its partners. SUMMARY:Science Diplomacy in Times of Global Crises
DESCRIPTION:The Austrian Cultural Forum New York (ACFNY) and its partners warmly invite you to a two-day event “Science Diplomacy in Times of Global Crises”. \nScience diplomacy is an often-promulgated concept in light of tackling global challenges in an increasingly interconnected and competitive world order. Science diplomacy is believed to foster peace and understanding between nations and has often been utilized to argue for more cooperation and openness among adverse states. Can science diplomacy keep up with its promise in an ever-more fragmented multipolar world? Does the concept and its basic tenets need to be revised or has science diplomacy never been more valid and important? \nThese questions will be addressed in a panel discussion on Thursday\, September 14th followed by a Symposium on Friday\, September 15th. \n  \nOPENING EVENT\nSEPTEMBER 14th 2023\, 7 PM\nAustrian Cultural Forum New York\n11 East 52nd Street\, 10022 New York \n  \nINVITATION\nSYMPOSIUM\nSEPTEMBER 15th 2023\, 10 AM\nThis Symposium is an official side event of the \nScience Summit at the 78th United Nations General Assembly taking place on September 12th-29th\, 2023.\nAustrian Cultural Forum New York\n11 East 52nd Street\, 10022 New York

SUMMARY:DEFA Film Library 30th Anniversary Screening: “Miss Butterfly (Fräulein Schmetterling)”
DESCRIPTION:Deutsches Haus at NYU and the DEFA Film Library at UMASS Amherst present a screening and discussion of Miss Butterfly (Fräulein Schmetterling) to commemorate the 30thanniversary of the DEFA Film Library. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDeutsches Haus at NYU and the DEFA Film Library at UMASS Amherst present a screening and discussion of Miss Butterfly (Fräulein Schmetterling) to commemorate the 30thanniversary of the DEFA Film Library. Opening remarks will be provided by Savannah Champion\, Social Media Assistant at the DEFA Film Library Amherst\, who will also moderate the audience Q&A following the screening of the film. This screening is a companion event to the Goethe-Institut Boston’s ‘Happy Birthday! The DEFA Film Library Turns 30’ series. \nAbout the film: When their father dies\, 17-year-old Helene Raupe and her little sister become orphans. Abandoned by their aunt\, they must face the challenges of daily life in East Berlin. Helene is only happy in her dreams\, where she can fly or be a stewardess or model. In real life\, in contrast\, she fails to meet people’s expectations and loses several jobs. \nCombining fantasy scenes and documentary elements filmed with a hidden camera on the streets\, Miss Butterfly was slated to be the first official experimental feature film made in the GDR. While still in production in 1965/1966\, however\, it was banned for its supposedly negative portrayal of everyday reality and its representation of bourgeois philosophies. In 2020\, this unique film was finally reconstructed based on the original script\, using preserved film and audio materials. The scenario was written by Christa Wolf and Gerhard Wolf. \nDEFA Film Library 30th Anniversary Screening: “Miss Butterfly (Fräulein Schmetterling)” is funded by the DAAD from funds of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA). \nDate and Time: Monday\, September 18th 2023\, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM \nLocation: Deutsches Haus at NYU\, 42 Washington Mews\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Climate Justice: A Transatlantic Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Panels of experts from Germany and the United States will discuss progress\, opportunities and challenges in advancing climate justice at international\, federal and subnational levels. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClimate change remains one of the greatest threats facing our planet. And yet\, its impacts are not experienced equally across the globe. Internationally\, developing countries are among the most vulnerable to the effects of a drastically warming climate. Domestically\, climate change disproportionately affects poor and marginalized communities\, and exacerbates inequitable social conditions. In light of this reality\, there have been growing calls for policymakers to consider the ethical\, social\, racial\, and intergenerational dimensions of the climate problem. \nThis concept—broadly referred to as climate justice—calls for the just division and equitable distribution of the responsibilities to address climate change\, and the burdens of mitigating its impacts. As policymakers\, advocates\, and other stakeholders increasingly search for innovative solutions to address disparities in climate impacts\, there is tremendous value in bringing together stakeholders from different jurisdictions to share their experiences and perspectives. \nAt this event\, panels of experts from Germany and the United States will discuss progress\, opportunities and challenges in advancing climate justice at international\, federal and subnational levels. \nDate and Time: September 18th \, 2:00 PM– 5:30 PM \nLocation: Greenberg Lounge\, NYU School of Law\, 40 Washington Sq. SUMMARY:German Film Office - Paul Robeson: “I’m a Negro. I’m an American.”
DESCRIPTION:Newly restored 1989 documentary by East German film director Kurt Tetzlaff\n4K restoration by the DEFA Foundation in Berlin\, Germany\, with new English subtitles by the DEFA Film Library at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Co-presented with the DEFA Film Library and Anthology Film Archives. \nThis 1989 documentary—made by East German film director Kurt Tetzlaff\, and newly restored by the DEFA Foundation—is a cinematic homage to the African-American singer\, actor\, and civil rights activist Paul Robeson (1898-1976). The film tells his story in non-chronological order\, using a compilation of materials: rarely shown historic footage\, photographs of the U.S. civil rights movement\, speeches\, performances\, and visits to East Germany and the Soviet Union. Interviews with Paul Robeson Jr.\, Earl Robinson\, Pete Seeger\, and Harry Belafonte give insight into the courageous life of a true Renaissance man. Co-produced by the GDR’s DEFA Studio for Documentary Film and the West Berlin production company Chronos\, with scenes shot in the U.S.\, the film reflects the efforts by East German officials to present Robeson—often referred to as a “voice of the other America” —as a poster child for GDR solidarity with the U.S. civil rights movement. \nFrom any perspective\, the film stands as an elegant\, revealing\, and powerful portrait of a towering figure in American culture\, society\, and politics. Revisiting episodes in Robeson’s life\, drawing attention to his performances and writings\, and confronting the virulent racism and anti-communism he faced in the U.S.\, Paul Robeson: “I’m a Negro. I’m an American” documents the life of a groundbreaking artist whose courage\, tenacity\, and passion remain profoundly inspiring. \nPresented by:\nThe screening on Wednesday\, September 20\, 6:45pm will be introduced by Kevina King\, Vice President of the Black German Heritage and Research Association. The screening on Saturday\, September 23\, 6:45pm will be introduced by Professor Mariana Ivanova\, Academic Director of the DEFA Film Library.

SUMMARY:Two at 1014: Kristina Lunz and Enuma Okoro on Foreign Policy\, Climate\, and Feminism
DESCRIPTION:Two days after the UN General Assembly in New York City\, 1014 presents Financial Times columnist Enuma Okoro and Kristina Lunz\, co-founder of the Centre for Feminist Foreign Policy\, in conversation about chances to improve global climate policy and creating a more caring international order. They will discuss feminist foreign policy and the accelerating climate crisis with each other and the audience. \nKristina Lunz will give insights into her latest book “The Future of Foreign Policy is Feminist”\, which will be published in English later this year. While the book is not yet available in the United States\, three copies will be raffled to the audience during the event. \nKristina Lunz and her “Centre for Feminist Foreign Policy” are trying to change that. The political scientist\, activist and entrepreneur thinks peace\, human rights and justice together with foreign policy and wants to initiate a paradigm shift: She counters power play and military muscle games with mediation in peace negotiations\, feminist power analyses and climate justice. Realpolitik is exchanged for utopias\, and there are just as many women ambassadors as ambassadors. In this way\, the antagonism of nations can finally be replaced\, and everyone will be able to live in greater security and with fewer conflicts. \n\n\n\nEnuma Okoro is a Nigerian-American author\, journalist\, lecturer\, and cultural curator. She is a weekly columnist for the Financial Times weekend newspaper. Her column\, “The Art of Life\,” reflects on the intersection of art\, philosophy\, spirituality\, culture and how we live. Her broader research and writing interests include considering how the arts\, intersectional feminism\, philosophy\, language and knowledge theory\, theology and contemplative eco-spirituality speak into the study of the human condition\, how we relate to the more-than-human\, and how we accumulate and produce knowledge. \nShe is convinced that stories\, through their varying mediums\, are how we challenge old narratives\, free our imaginations\, and tell new and expanded truths that shift perceptions and instigate change.

SUMMARY:Book Presentation: The Art of Assembly

Colonial Aesthetics\, Political Affects\, and Taste Tanks” a public lecture and conversation with Ulrike Bergermann\, DAAD Visiting Scholar and Professor of Media Studies at the University of Art in Braunschweig\, and Katrin Köppert\, Assistant Professor for Art History and Popular Cultures at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts. \nTaste has a history\, or rather many – personal\, embodied histories as well as philosophical and colonial histories. A new understanding of taste emerged in the aesthetics of the enlightenment\, while colonialism and enslavement provided new experiences of taste and ‘having taste’. Following on from this\, and with a glance to the euro-american story of cocoa\, we might think of a need to not only “decolonize the mind” (Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o) but also the senses. With the help of the queerfeminist concept of “Feel Tanks” and current theories of collectivity\, taste\, and affect\, I discuss the idea of “Taste Tanks” for a disruption of the sensible. \nDate and Time: Thursday\, September 21st 2023\, 6:00 PM-7:30 PM \nLocation: Deutsches Haus at NYU\, 42 Washington Mews\, New York\, NY 10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Goethe-Institut Film Screening: Sam – A Saxon
DESCRIPTION:Special screening & masterclass session with the cast and production team of the groundbreaking series\nThe German Film Office is pleased to present a special screening and masterclass session with the cast and production team of the groundbreaking series Sam – A Saxon based on the incredible true story of Samuel Njankouo Meffire\, East Germany’s first Black policeman. The event will highlight the groundbreaking impact the series has had on the Afro-German and Black communities in Germany\, and the opportunities it sets out to create for underrepresented and underserved voices in the industry. \nThe seven-part series available to stream exclusively on Hulu follows Sam (Malick Bauer) who joins the police force after his father’s murder. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989\, he becomes the face of an anti-racism campaign and a media sensation\, catapulting him into a newly formed police squad with the mission to squash the rising tide of neo-Nazis in the post-communist East. His fame and success as a Nazi hunter are not appreciated by everyone. As his journey takes a dark turn\, he finds himself framed as an internationally wanted criminal and branded Germany’s ‘public enemy number one’. \nThrough Sam’s eyes\, the series allows audiences to experience his fight for recognition\, justice\, and a place to call home in the wild years following German reunification. \nSam – A Saxon combines an outstanding and diverse team both behind and in front of the camera\, with the following cast and crew members confirmed to appear at the Goethe-Institut New York: Samuel Meffire; lead actor Malick Bauer (as Sam Meffire); actor Ivy Quainoo (as Jenny); actor Paula Essam Baumert (as Sabine); creator\, showrunner\, head writer\, and executive producer Jörg Winger; creator\, actor\, and executive producer Tyron Ricketts; and creator\, head writer\, executive producer Chris Silber. A masterclass session\, moderated by Alexis Clark\, Assistant Professor at the Columbia School of Journalism\, will follow a screening of the series’ first two episodes. \nPresented by:\nPresented in collaboration with Black German Heritage and Research Association\, Columbia University School of Journalism\, and Big Window Productions\, a label of UFA Fiction.
