DESCRIPTION:Deutsches Haus at NYU and Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU present “Berlin Asian Diaspora Anthology Project” a public lecture and conversation with Selma Siew Li Bidlingmaier\, DAAD Visiting Scholar and postdoc researcher and teaching fellow at the American Studies Department\, Humboldt University Berlin and Feng-Mei Heberer\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Cinema Studies at NYU. The talk will introduce the nascent Berlin Asian Diaspora Anthology Project and discusses the goals\, methods\, mediums\, as well as challenges facing this endeavor. \nContemporary public (his)stories of East\, South\, and South East Asians in Germany often tend to locate the community within disparate migratory “moments”\, particularly during the Cold War and the postwar era. The Vietnamese being the largest “Asian” community in Germany are most visible in public discourses. The history of GDR guest workers (“Gastarbeiter”)\, and refugees who came during the Vietnam War are well documented\, often telling larger histories of Germany’s postwar geopolitical positionality and role. However\, due to varying reasons\, little attention is given to other diasporas such as the Chinese\, Japanese\, Korean\, Indian\, Pakistani\, Thai\, and Filipinx. The histories of interconnections between the various diasporas that began as early as the 19th leaves a gap not only within the histories of Asians in Germany but also the historiography of Germany as a nation. \nIn 2020\, as Covid raged around the world\, anti-Asian racism and hate crimes soared in the US\, Canada\, and Europe. Asians were once again pitted as the perpetual foreigner and discourses of race and disease regained political and social currency. The Berlin Asian Diaspora Anthology Project emerged during this period to address hegemonic ideologies of Asian foreignness in Berlin and in Germany. SUMMARY:Club J-1: Private Tenement Museum Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Tenement Museum in NYC is a historic museum that offers immersive experiences of the city’s immigrant history. Located at 97 Orchard Street\, it showcases the daily lives of immigrant families who lived in the tenement building over the decades\, providing insights into their struggles and contributions to American society. \nThis will be a 60-minute interactive tour visit\, led by a museum educator. During the visit\, participants explore the history of 97 Orchard Street\, focusing on the lives of the families who lived there over a 75-year period. They journey back to the 1870s\, experiencing a lager beer saloon run by John and Caroline Schneider\, and then visit their bedroom. The tour also transports participants to the Great Depression era\, highlighting Max Marcus’s auction house. Throughout the visit\, there are opportunities for questions\, providing a deep understanding of immigrant family life and community resilience in New York City’s history. \nClub J-1 is an exclusive network of J-1 interns and trainees plus their friends from all over the world. Through this network\, participants will be linked to other interns and trainees to share their experiences and meet new people.

DESCRIPTION:Composed in 1828 in Franz Schubert‘s final days\, Schwanengesang (Swan Song) traverses a myriad of emotions. Sitting at the pinnacle of a vocalist’s repertory\, these emotive works are given a thrilling new life in the world premiere of a theatrical staging by one of opera’s most adventurous directors\, Claus Guth. \nPerformed by world-renowned tenor Jonas Kaufmann with his long-time collaborator pianist Helmut Deutsch\, the heart-melting collection of songs is amplified by additional Schubert repertory\, an evocative soundscape\, and transformative light and video projections to create a production that is part performance and part installation art. DESCRIPTION:Four ballets by Miro Magloire\, to live music by Maurice Ravel\, Pierre Boulez\, Beat Furrer and Wong Foo Jeng. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGerman-born choreographer Miro Magloire opens his New Chamber Ballet’s 2023-24 season with four dances set to music by Maurice Ravel\, Pierre Boulez\, and contemporary composers Beat Furrer and Wong Foo Jeng\, on September 22 & 23\, 7:30 PM\, at the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn. \nIn A Simple Black Dress\, originally premiered in 2010 to celebrate Pierre Boulez’s 85th birthday\, is set to the composer’s virtuoso violin solo Anthèmes. The mysterious quality of the dance comes from the dancer wearing only one pointe shoe\, an imbalance that results in a dynamically off-kilter experience for the performer. \nThe somber duet Voicelessness is set to music by Swiss composer Beat Furrer. “Voicelessness is heavy\,” reviewer Melanie Brown said about the ballet’s 2015 premiere\, “but smoothly choreographed. [The dancers] are joined near constantly\, performing demanding partner work that borders on acrobatic\, and doing it seamlessly.” (Stagebudy.com) \nDjazz is a whirlwind ballet to music by Maurice Ravel. DESCRIPTION:Special screening & masterclass session with the cast and production team of the groundbreaking series\nThe German Film Office is pleased to present a special screening and masterclass session with the cast and production team of the groundbreaking series Sam – A Saxon based on the incredible true story of Samuel Njankouo Meffire\, East Germany’s first Black policeman. The event will highlight the groundbreaking impact the series has had on the Afro-German and Black communities in Germany\, and the opportunities it sets out to create for underrepresented and underserved voices in the industry. \nThe seven-part series available to stream exclusively on Hulu follows Sam (Malick Bauer) who joins the police force after his father’s murder. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989\, he becomes the face of an anti-racism campaign and a media sensation\, catapulting him into a newly formed police squad with the mission to squash the rising tide of neo-Nazis in the post-communist East. His fame and success as a Nazi hunter are not appreciated by everyone. Colonial Aesthetics\, Political Affects\, and Taste Tanks” a public lecture and conversation with Ulrike Bergermann\, DAAD Visiting Scholar and Professor of Media Studies at the University of Art in Braunschweig\, and Katrin Köppert\, Assistant Professor for Art History and Popular Cultures at the Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts. \nTaste has a history\, or rather many – personal\, embodied histories as well as philosophical and colonial histories. A new understanding of taste emerged in the aesthetics of the enlightenment\, while colonialism and enslavement provided new experiences of taste and ‘having taste’. Following on from this\, and with a glance to the euro-american story of cocoa\, we might think of a need to not only “decolonize the mind” (Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o) but also the senses. DESCRIPTION:Two days after the UN General Assembly in New York City\, 1014 presents Financial Times columnist Enuma Okoro and Kristina Lunz\, co-founder of the Centre for Feminist Foreign Policy\, in conversation about our chances to improve global climate policy and create a more caring international order. They will discuss feminist foreign policy and the accelerating climate crisis with each other and the audience. \nKristina Lunz will give insights into her latest book “The Future of Foreign Policy is Feminist”\, which will be published in English later this year. While the book is not yet available in the United States\, three copies will be raffled to the audience during the event. \nKristina Lunz and her “Centre for Feminist Foreign Policy” are trying to change that. The political scientist\, activist and entrepreneur thinks peace\, human rights and justice together with foreign policy and wants to initiate a paradigm shift: She counters power play and military muscle games with mediation in peace negotiations\, feminist power analyses and climate justice. Realpolitik is exchanged for utopias\, and there are just as many women ambassadors as ambassadors. In this way\, the antagonism of nations can finally be replaced\, and everyone will be able to live in greater security and with fewer conflicts. \nEnuma Okoro is a Nigerian-American author\, journalist\, lecturer\, and cultural curator. She is a weekly columnist for the Financial Times weekend newspaper. Her column\, “The Art of Life\,” reflects on the intersection of art\, philosophy\, spirituality\, culture and how we live. DESCRIPTION:In his book The Art of Assembly. Political Theatre Today curator and author Florian Malzacher surveys theatre today to demonstrate its political potential in both form and content. In a time of wide-ranging crisis\, The Art of Assembly is a plea for a strong definition of the political and for a theatre that is not content merely to reflect the world’s ills but instead acts to change them. \nFlorian Malzacher is a curator\, writer\, and dramaturg\, as well as the host of The Art of Assembly\, a series of talks about the potential of gathering in art\, activism\, and politics (since 2021). His current projects include Training for the Future (with Jonas Staal). He was artistic director of Impulse Theater Festival in Cologne\, Dusseldorf\, and Mülheim an der Ruhr (2013–2017)\, and co-curator of the multidisciplinary arts festival steirischer herbst in Graz\, Austria (2006–2012). He is co-author and co-editor of numerous publications on contemporary theatre\, curating performing arts and the relationship between art and politics. His texts have been translated into more than fifteen languages. \nClaire Bishop is a critic and professor in the PhD Program in Art History at the Graduate Center\, City University of New York. Her books include Artificial Hells: Participatory Art and the Politics of Spectatorship (Verso\, 2012)\, and Radical Museology\, or\, What’s Contemporary in Museums of Contemporary Art? (Walther König\, 2013). She is a Contributing Editor of Artforum\, and her essays and books have been translated into twenty languages. She is about to publish two books: Merce Cunningham’s Events: Key Concepts (Koenig Books\, 2023) and Disordered Attention: How We Look at Art and Performance Today (Verso\, 2024).

They will discuss feminist foreign policy and the accelerating climate crisis with each other and the audience. \nKristina Lunz will give insights into her latest book “The Future of Foreign Policy is Feminist”\, which will be published in English later this year. While the book is not yet available in the United States\, three copies will be raffled to the audience during the event. \nKristina Lunz and her “Centre for Feminist Foreign Policy” are trying to change that. The political scientist\, activist and entrepreneur thinks peace\, human rights and justice together with foreign policy and wants to initiate a paradigm shift: She counters power play and military muscle games with mediation in peace negotiations\, feminist power analyses and climate justice. Realpolitik is exchanged for utopias\, and there are just as many women ambassadors as ambassadors. In this way\, the antagonism of nations can finally be replaced\, and everyone will be able to live in greater security and with fewer conflicts. \n\n\n\nEnuma Okoro is a Nigerian-American author\, journalist\, lecturer\, and cultural curator. She is a weekly columnist for the Financial Times weekend newspaper. Her column\, “The Art of Life\,” reflects on the intersection of art\, philosophy\, spirituality\, culture and how we live. Her broader research and writing interests include considering how the arts\, intersectional feminism\, philosophy\, language and knowledge theory\, theology and contemplative eco-spirituality speak into the study of the human condition\, how we relate to the more-than-human\, and how we accumulate and produce knowledge. \nShe is convinced that stories\, through their varying mediums\, are how we challenge old narratives\, free our imaginations\, and tell new and expanded truths that shift perceptions and instigate change.

The DEFA Film Library Turns 30’ series. \nAbout the film: When their father dies\, 17-year-old Helene Raupe and her little sister become orphans. Abandoned by their aunt\, they must face the challenges of daily life in East Berlin. Helene is only happy in her dreams\, where she can fly or be a stewardess or model. In real life\, in contrast\, she fails to meet people’s expectations and loses several jobs. \nCombining fantasy scenes and documentary elements filmed with a hidden camera on the streets\, Miss Butterfly was slated to be the first official experimental feature film made in the GDR. While still in production in 1965/1966\, however\, it was banned for its supposedly negative portrayal of everyday reality and its representation of bourgeois philosophies. In 2020\, this unique film was finally reconstructed based on the original script\, using preserved film and audio materials. DESCRIPTION:In his latest book\, Alzheimer’s Disease Research: What Has Guided Research So Far and Why It Is High Time for a Paradigm Shift\, neuroscientist Christian Behl outlines the history of Alzheimer’s research up to the present day and criticizes that for too long research has focused on one particular hypothesis\, the so-called “amyloid-cascade-hypothesis\,” and has not adequately followed a wider range of promising research paths. From the work of the disease’s namesake Aloysius Alzheimer 100 years ago\, to the most recent drug developments and controversies of the last decades\, Behl tracks how much of the research has almost exclusively concentrated on the role of amyloid beta peptide\, a key component of plaques found in the brain of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease.\nBehl suggests that it is time to re-evaluate the “amyloid cascade hypothesis” and the actual role of amyloid beta peptide in the disease. He presents a number of alternative disease hypotheses and raises pertinent questions about Alzheimer’s disease research strategies\, the funding landscape\, and the too narrow focus on one dominating hypothesis.\n\n\n\n\nProf. Dr. Behl will introduce his book\, and then dive into a discussion with Dr. Tia Powell. DESCRIPTION:The Center for European and Mediterranean Studies and the Deutsches Haus at NYU are pleased to announce the presentation of the book Homelands: A Personal History of Europe by the renowned British historian Timothy Garton Ash. In his new book\, Ash gives a unique account of the history of Europe since 1945\, drawing on his extensive personal notes from 50 years of events witnessed\, places visited\, and historymakers encountered (from Margaret Thatcher to Vladimir Putin) to chart the rise and then faltering of the quest for a ‘Europe whole and free’. \nIn this lecture\, Professor Garton Ash will extend the analysis in Homelands to offer an interpretation of how Europe progressed from the post-War period (famously analysed by Tony Judt) to what he calls the post-Wall period. And why it then regressed\, in a ‘downward turn’ after 2008\, culminating in Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 – beginning the largest war in Europe since 1945. What did Europe get right? Where did it go wrong?
