SUMMARY:ClimateTech Founders Summit 2023
DESCRIPTION:Three years after a once-in-a-generation pandemic\, 1014 have continued to be in crisis mode\, with global supply chain disruptions\, inflation\, an energy crisis and an ongoing war in Europe. While we’re fighting various crises\, the biggest challenge humanity faces is still not being addressed sufficiently: the climate crisis. \nYet\, there are more founders\, start ups and investors focused on climate change than ever before. So what’s missing? \nUnder the 2023 theme of ‘Pivot’ they are looking for answers to this question. What do we need to do to massively scale climate solutions? How can founders set themselves up for global scale & what support is needed from the ecosystem? \nHumanity needs to pivot from decade-old behaviours. Founders and executives need to pivot to impact-driven business models and we need to transform our economy towards ‘impact capitalism’\, driven by both profit & positive impact. \nJoin at ClimateTech Founders Summit 2023. A two day trans-Atlantic journey sharing innovative perspectives accompanied with unique opportunities to connect with fellow disruptors\, climate innovators and impact-driven leaders. \nIt’s time to Connect. Collaborate. Disrupt.

SUMMARY:Global Wagner: Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Global Wagner – From Bayreuth to the World is not a biography of Richard Wagner\, nor is it a musicological analysis of his work. This is a documentary dedicated solely to the world’s fascination with the man\, and an exploration of the question as to how such massive hype and world-wide cult following developed around this highly controversial artist. The film is a revealing feature-length study of life with Wagner’s legacy from one Bayreuth Festival to the next\, and we travel the world to meet devoted Wagnerians and those most intimately involved in commenting on and producing his work today. Directed by Axel Brüggemann\, in German and English\, featuring Katharina Wagner\, Christian Thielemann\, Alex Ross\, Valery Gergiev\, Plácido Domingo\, Piotr Beczała\, Barrie Kosky\, and Anja Harteros. Presented by the Wagner Society of New York. \nDate and Time: November 8\, 2023 at 6:30 PM \nLocation: Dolby Screening Room; 1350 6th Ave\, New York\, NY 10019 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Elisabeth Weber’s “Bewilderments. On Western-Indigenous Translative Curiosity”
DESCRIPTION:Deutsches Haus at NYU and the Department of German at NYU present a talk by Elisabeth Weber on “Bewilderments. On Western-Indigenous Translative Curiosity.” \nEmanuele Coccia’s The Life of Plants proposes to “reopen the question of the world” through the deceptively simple\, yet radical fact that all breathing living beings breathe because of plants. Refuting the metaphysical assumption that breath as spirit (psyché rather than pneuma) inhabits a higher ontological order than matter\, Coccia fundamentally adjusts the claim of animal superiority over plants. As original as this approach might be in contemporary Western thought\, for Indigenous traditions\, it is age-old. Not deterred by the “epistemic disconcertment” (H. Verran) between disparate knowledge traditions the – Western/Northern and Amerindian –\, the Potawatomi scientist-botanist-ecologist Robin Wall Kimmerer engages in a practice of translative curiosity which\, in the age of climate disaster\, is more critical than ever. \nElisabeth Weber is Professor of German and Comparative Literature at the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, where she is also an instructor for the ‘Foundations in the Humanities’ Prison Pedagogy Correspondence Program of the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center. She currently serves as the Charlotte M. Craig Distinguished Visiting Professor at Rutgers University. She is the author of two books: Persecution and Trauma. On Emmanuel Lévinas’ Autrement qu’être ou au-delà de l’essence (1990\, in German) and Kill Boxes. Facing the Legacy of US-Sponsored Torture\, Indefinite Detention\, and Drone Warfare (2017). She has edited several volumes\, in particular Questions au Judaïsme\, a collection of interviews with\, among others\, Pierre Vidal-Naquet\, Jacques Derrida\, Emmanuel Levinas\, Jean-François Lyotard (1996\, English translation 2004)\, and Living Together. Jacques Derrida’s Communities of Violence and Peace (2013)\, as well as three books by Jacques Derrida. Together with Julie Carlson she also co-edited Speaking about Torture (2012). Currently she works on environmental humanities\, with an emphasis on literary and cultural plant studies. \n“Bewilderments. On Western-Indigenous Translative Curiosity” is funded by the DAAD from funds of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA). \nDate and Time: Thursday\, November 9th 2023\, from 6:00 PM-7:30 PM \nLocation: Deutsches Haus at NYU\, 42 Washington Mews\, New York\, NY \n10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Sianne Ngai’s “Inhabiting Error: From ‘Last Christmas’ to ‘Senior’s Last Hour’”
DESCRIPTION:The Department of German at NYU and Deutsches Haus at NYU present “Inhabiting Error: From ‘Last Christmas’ to ‘Senior’s Last Hour’” an NYU German Graduate Student Invited Lecture Series\, with a lecture by Sianne Ngai. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Department of German at NYU and Deutsches Haus at NYU present “Inhabiting Error: From ‘Last Christmas’ to ‘Senior’s Last Hour’” an NYU German Graduate Student Invited Lecture Series\, with a lecture by Sianne Ngai\, organized by organized by Manuela Ruckdeschel\, Raymond Blankenhorn\, and Lukas Oberem. \nThis talk uses a pop song by Wham! and a reading of Marx’s Das Kapital to explore the stakes of recreating and lingering in wrong ways of thinking. To linger in error is to run the risk of affectively deepening error\, expanding the reach of its domain. This is especially the case in a world where truths are hidden by the social forms in which they are expressed\, making error an unavoidable part of everyday perception. Yet when contradiction is a part of the world (as Marx and Hegel saw it) and not just an unfortunate tendency of how subjects understand it (as Kant saw it)\, error must be phenomenologically inhabited in order to be fully understood. \nAbout the participant: \nSianne Ngai is Andrew W. Mellon Professor of English at the University of Chicago. Her writing has been translated into multiple languages\, most recently into German as Das Niedliche und der Gimmick: Zwei ästhetische Kategorien\, trans. Christina Dongowski (Leipzig: Merve Verlag\, 2022). \nSianne Ngai’s “Inhabiting Error: From ‘Last Christmas’ to ‘Senior’s Last Hour’” is funded by the DAAD from funds of the German Federal Foreign Office (AA). \nDate and Time: Friday\, November 17th 2023\, from 5:30 PM-7:00 PM \nLocation: Deutsches Haus at NYU\, 42 Washington Mews\, New York\, NY \n10003 \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Resilience & Adaptation 2.0.: Global Labor Movements and the Role of Trade Unions in the Green Transition
DESCRIPTION:Transitioning to a green economy is one of the major tasks\, with global labor unions calling not only for an environmentally\, but also socially sustainable approach; What is the scope of this “just transition”\, and how can it be realized? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe world of work is undergoing an unprecedented period of change and transformation driven by technological advancements as well as external factors. Globalization\, demographic trends\, technology\, and the environment are all having an impact on today’s labor markets and are likely to shape those of the future. Although membership has been on the decline\, trade unions are on the front line in efforts to find innovative responses to the myriad challenges of structural change. \nMany have spoken out in support of the transition to a green economy\, but very few have focused on the development of a “just transition” strategy proposed by global labor unions – which fight for basic rights and more just social interactions. How do trade unions respond to global trends and geopolitical developments? Is there a new global labor movement? What is the scope of “just transition” today\, and how have labor unions developed and refined it to make the move toward a green economy both environmentally and socially sustainable? Is the road to net-zero paved with jobs? \nOn Tuesday\, November 28\, the American Council on Germany and 1014 will host a second virtual discussion on the future of work with Thorben Albrecht\, Policy Director of IG Metall and former State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs\, and Dr. Annelise Orleck\, Professor of History at Dartmouth College. \nThorben Albrecht currently serves as Policy Director of IG Metall\, the German metalworkers’ trade union. He is an internationally recognized expert on the future of work. His fields of expertise include automation and artificial intelligence\, new forms of work\, and managing transitions\, including skills development\, flexibility arrangements\, and social dialogue. From 2017 to 2019\, Mr. Albrecht was a member of the Global Commission on the Future of Work established by the International Labor Organization (ILO). He also served as Permanent State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (2014-2018). From 2008 to 2013\, he was Head of Office for Andrea Nahles and of the policy department of the Executive Board of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD). Prior to that he worked for the National Executive Board of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) as Head of Division responsible for the coordination of European affairs. \nDr. Annelise Orleck is a professor at Dartmouth College where she focuses on history\, politics\, activism\, American radicalism\, race studies and women’s\, gender\, and sexuality studies. She is the author of several books\, including: Rethinking American Women’s Activism; Storming Caesars Palace: How Black Mothers Fought Their Own War on Poverty; and Common Sense and a Little Fire: Women and Working Class Politics in the U.S. \nDate and Time: Tuesday\, November 28\, 2023 – 11:00 AM-12:00 PM \nLocation: Virtual – Zoom \nMore information:

SUMMARY:Elisabeth Weber’s “Bewilderments. On Western-Indigenous Translative Curiosity”
DESCRIPTION:Deutsches Haus at NYU and the Department of German at NYU present a talk by Elisabeth Weber on “Bewilderments. On Western-Indigenous Translative Curiosity.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDeutsches Haus at NYU and the Department of German at NYU present a talk by Elisabeth Weber on “Bewilderments. SUMMARY:Humanities for Humans: World on the Move
DESCRIPTION:This trans-Atlantic conversation about migration\, part of a series called Humanities for Humans explores current migration trends\, why they are happening\, and how the role of so-called “race” have influenced the history of migration. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe’re told by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees that more people are currently in motion across the planet than even during the previous peak in the wake of the Second World War. \nLegal Scholar and Professor Kathryn Abrams\, University of California\, Berkeley and Migration and Racism Expert and Independent Scholar Mark Terkessidis\, Berlin\, Germany\, will address such questions as: Who is moving and why? From where? To where? Should we be differentiating among people on the move? Is there a human right to move? To move when your home is a war zone? An ecological disaster zone? An economic disaster zone? Can places to which migrants want to move accommodate them? Why are so many political parties on the right in receiving nations using migration issues to motivate voters? How do terms and narratives used for would be migrants affect what receiving populations think about them? Are “dangers” real or made up with regard to cultures being changed by incoming groups who don’t speak the currently dominant language or practice currently dominant religions? What roles have so-called “race” and the realities of multicultural societies played in the history of migration and play today? \nOur experts will also report on the creativity and agency of migrants themselves in defending their rights and achieving their goals of new and safer lives for themselves and their children\, as well as offer examples of contexts\, initiatives and programs through which some receiving countries have made a start toward supporting or integrating migrants. Moderated by Professor Irene Kacandes\, Dartmouth College. \nIn Partnership with the Walter de Gruyter Foundation. \nThis event is part of a series called “Humanities for Humans”\, presented in partnership with the Walter de Gruyter Foundation (Berlin). Across eight sessions — four in-person and four virtual — the series brings people together to help generate a better understanding of what the humanities are and what role they can play in today’s complex world. \nDate and Time: Thursday\, December 7\, 2023 – 12:00 PM-1:00 PM \nLocation: virtual – Zoom \nMore information:
