SUMMARY:Exhibition by German-Vietnamese artist Sung Tieu at Amant
DESCRIPTION:Sung Tieu’s exhibition continues her ongoing research into the psychological and physical dimensions of hidden threats and how they affect the social life of communities. Through different study subjects\, she analyzes how private and state agencies use infrastructure and bureaucracy to exert psychological and informational control. \nBy blurring the lines between evidence and counter-evidence\, fact and fiction\, Sung Tieu’s work presents the limits of our capacity to fully distinguish between the known and unknown. Throughout the exhibition\, she explores how information\, or the lack thereof\, can change perception\, affecting our bodies and ways of understanding our environment. \nSung Tieu (b.1987 in Hai Duong\, Vietnam) is a German-Vietnamese artist based in Berlin. Her artistic practice spans a variety of mediums including sound\, video\, sculpture\, photography\, public interventions and writing. \nAmant is a non-profit arts organization in Brooklyn\, New York that fosters experimentation and dialogue through exhibitions\, public programs\, and artist residencies. This exhibition is supported by the Goethe-Institut.

SUMMARY:Mine and Yours: Forms of Distinction
DESCRIPTION:Solo exhibition by artist Felix Kindermann \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur built environment is full of structures that both constrict and facilitate movement. From the architecture of public and private buildings\, to city planning and subway systems\, to national borders and jurisdictional limits\, to the languages we speak and the ones we do not\, imagined and real boundaries define and condition how we move in the world and how we interact within it. \nIn this exhibition\, Mine and Yours: Forms of Distinction\, Felix Kindermann takes up the ubiquity of fences and their social function in New York City. Observing that many fences at residences and public spaces are too short to truly prevent a persistent visitor from crossing\, Kindermann posits the fence as a structure of sociality. At once\, they act as symbols of class and wealth\, delimit and open the space between personal and private\, and elucidates who belongs in a given space—and who does not. Fences keep out\, but also let in. \nKindermann’s practice has long centered the relationships between people in response to their environments\, with a particular focus on themes of togetherness and separation within communities. These works consider the interhuman encounter shaped by the structure of the fence and the notion of reciprocal actions. In this exhibition\, Kindermann posits new photographic and installation artworks that negotiate the complex tension between the production and possession of these social boundaries. \nOpen through July 7th \nGoethe-Institut New York (30 Irving Place\, Ground Floor)

SUMMARY:300 Years of Herrnhut
DESCRIPTION:This exibition commemorates the founding of Herrnhut as a unique religious community and global network. Open until July 31st in the German House. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout 300 years ago\, on June 17th in 1722\, Herrnhut was founded as a refuge for Protestant exiles from Moravia (in the Eastern part of today’s Czech Republic). Under the leadership of carpenter Christian David (1692-1751)\, German-speaking descendants of the Church of the Bohemian Brethren settled on the Berthelsdorf estate of Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zizendorf (1700-1760) in Upper Lusatia\, Saxony. Life in the newly founded village was shaped by the ideal of forming a community of believers in Christ according to the example of the church in the New Testament. \nHerrnhut soon became a center of attraction for like-minded religious seekers from other parts of Germany and beyond. The village dveloped quickly and eventually became a model for the stablishment of other congregations in Europe and throughout the world. It forms the birth place of the modern Moravian Church\, which today numbers more than 1 million members in about 30 countries. \nThis exibition commemorates the founding of Herrnhut as a unique religious community and global network. \nOpen daily from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM until July 31st in the German House\, 871 United Nations Plaza\, New York\, NY 10017
